Chief Operating Officer (FILLED)

DESCRIPTION

The Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for leading all staff functions of the Firm including Finance, HR, Recruiting, Marketing, Facilities & Office Services, Professional Support, Research, Procurement, Technology, and Risk Management. Reporting directly to the Chairperson, the position will manage ongoing activities and simultaneously reconfigure business processes and systems to drive efficiency and support continued development of the organization.

A key objective for this role is to systematically and comprehensively implement proven best practice approaches to position the Firm for its next 50 years of growth. The successful candidate will thus need strategic vision to design and effectively deploy a transformation program spanning operations, technology, and human capital, along with the execution capability to drive individual projects through to successful completion. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Lead 50+ direct and indirect reports, with authority over employment decisions, performance management, and compensation within guidelines.
  • Streamline and automate Finance processes to shift focus away from periodic transaction processing towards provision of value-added insights, becoming a true business partner to the professional services team.
  • Apply Human Resource best practices including compensation design, benefits administration, performance management, and professional development across the professional and non-professional employee base, positioning the organization as an employer of choice.
  • Hone the Recruiting strategy to define strategic staffing needs, develop an explicit employer value proposition, identify target candidates, and execute the sourcing and hiring process.
  • Crystallize the brand positioning and communications strategy of the Firm, driving both internal and external Marketing and Public Relations resources to maximize positive awareness and consideration among target influencers and decision makers, supporting the development of new practices, geographies, and overall organic growth.
  • Manage Facilities & Office Services, providing premier support to the Firm and its clients on a cost-effective basis.
  • Direct Professional Support personnel, developing a highly motivated team recognized as a key component of overall exceptional service delivery to clients.
  • Drive Procurement efficiency, establishing sourcing strategies for all major spend categories, understanding total costs of ownership, assessing vendor capabilities relative to Firm needs, managing relationships, and rebidding and renegotiating contracts as necessary. Represent the organization with external partners and suppliers, with signature authority up to preset limits.
  • Design and implement a modern Technology architecture and suite of integrated solutions, reengineering core business processes and supporting systems to maximize workflow transparency and efficiency, eliminate manual tasks, and ensure a robust and secure platform.
  • Continually assess the Risk Management exposure of the Firm, installing policies and procedures to mitigate threats and ensuring adequate, cost effective coverage for potential liabilities.
  • Foster a dynamic culture with ambitious goals, while respecting the legacy values that have enabled the Firm’s success to date.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • MBA or Master of Science degree, with professional certifications preferred
  • Ten years of professional experience encompassing both significant corporate organizations (e.g., Fortune 1000) as well as professional services firms (e.g., with 150+ professionals) involved in management consulting, architectural services, engineering services, or marketing/public relations
  • Minimum ten years of progressive leadership experience and demonstrated career progression such as achievement of Senior Manager, Director, or Senior Director levels at relevant firms
  • Strategic mindset, grounding decisions and activities in solid, intuitive “big picture” understanding of key value drivers and enablers
  • Highly analytical and data-oriented, comfortable interpreting financial and other quantitative and qualitative results and applying rigorous logic to prioritize opportunities and monitor progress through value capture
  • Strong bias for action, a decisive “hands-on” project leader who plans and executes in detail, making difficult decisions and taking end-to-end responsibility for achieving results
  • An inspirational and persuasive leader who excels managing both up and down, instilling confidence in stakeholders and motivating the organization to outperform expectations
